  2. Sally: I am also a great grandchild of “Dr. Posner.” My grandfather was Jacob, my father Daniel. I recall ordering ‘Flying Aces’ shoes from a catalog when I was a kid … they would show up a few weeks later via the big brown UPS truck. This was in the mid 1960s.

Would you please give me a call or send me a note via emai? My son, Richard, is doing some research on the Dr. Posner shoe company … looks like you may have more than the meager documents I have at hand. (I recall finding more at my mother’s house in Flushing, NY but she’s not able to get into the basement to look). Thanks. Here’s my contact:

  5. Sally, if interested, I have been posting a collection of letters to a family blog (www.annbkennedy.blogspot.com), each written by my mother to my grandmother over about 40 years, beginning in 1941. They certainly represent a first hand accounting of the life of at least one American housewife. I am enjoying your blog, and what a great resource it is! Many thanks.

I enjoyed reading your ‘Ding, Dong… Avon Calling Pt II’ blog. On that page, you show the 1956 ‘Happy Homemaker’ illustration by Lionel Gilbert. Can you tell me a source for that? I have been searching online, but so far cannot find one. Best Regards. –Todd

  14. Sally, I’m writing an essay on the Pledge of Allegiance. I don’t charge for my blog, by the way. In the content there is a section that addresses the addition of “under God” to the original pledge, and how Eisenhour felt it was an appropriate addition given the climate between the US and the USSR, pre-Cold War. One image in particular speaks to the prevailing attitude during that time. Its url is envisioningtheamericandream.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/american-soviet-propaganda.jpg. Would you give me permission to use the image with proper reference?

    Hello,
My name is Steven and I am currently a video intern for the San Diego Automotive Museum.
I was put on assignment to gather old gas station photos from around the 1940s to 1970s and am impressed with the ads I’ve found on your page.
I’m writing to you seeking your approval that I may use a couple photos in a slideshow/video I’m producing.
The end of the slideshow/video will hold credits to all those whom have contributed to the making of the video.

Thank you so much for your time and amazing webpage!

    Hello,

My name is Alex and I stumbled upon your site while looking at some old ads because I absolutely adore the vintage art style. I found the image ‘At Home with the Nuclear Family’ which features a family at home, with slides of a nuclear explosion impacting a house next to it. I was wondering if i would be able to use it as an album cover if i ever made one. I’d be willing to pay a fee and give you full credit for allowing usage of the image.

    Thank you

  18. Dear Sally,

I, Nuttha Isaraphithakkul, work as a curator at Thailand Creative & Design Center, a non-profit government agency of Thailand, would like to enquire the usage right of the third photo “In mid-century America,no one wanted to be considered underprivileged, electrically speaking. Vintage Ad- America’s Independent Electric Light and Power Company 1955” that can be found in the page: https://envisioningtheamericandream.com/2014/09/25/plugged-into-the-american-dream/. I am working on the online project regarding the topic of design thinking for energy efficiency.

As a free and democratize knowledge platform, this online project is solely served as a tool to distribute the knowledge about design thinking across Thailand and also at international level through the subject of energy efficiency at an introductory level to create an awareness and application of design thinking that could enhance the potential of the public, academia and energy sector. The curatorial team believes that this photo is one of the vivid photo to depict the phenomenon of typical American home as an impact of the “Live Better Electrically” Campaign of GE which depicting the story of large energy consumption in the past. This photo will be featured and credited in the historical energy context in the past in a short caption with 1 photo showing the context of the massive consumption of energy due to the “Live Better Electrically” Campaign.

Therefore, I would like to ask you for the right to use this photo. The website will be launched in the beginning of December. Your response will be much appreciated.

If you would like to know more information about Thailand Creative & Design Center please visit our website: http://www.tcdc.or.th/about/ If you need further information please contact me.

Hello! I am a high-schooler who competes in public speaking through NCFCA (National Christian Forensics and Communications Association.) My speech is about the history of ice cream, and I’m making boards to illustrate my topic. One of my points is about ice cream during World War II, and with your permission, would it possible to use the first picture of the 1944 WW2 Homefront on your blog to demonstrate my speech? I will only be using the photo for a season.

NCFCA requires any pictures that are from sources to give all the credit to the source and link their website under the picture. I completely understand if I’m not allowed to use the picture. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

    Sally,

Can I use one of the images in a college essay regarding the American Dream? I will cite you, your blog and the company who created the ad (Lee Rubber). I would like to use the “These are fundamental” image by the Lee Rubber & Tire Corporation. It is not for commercial use, only academic.

    Thank you!

Hi Sally, Firstly – great site. Secondly, I’d love to use the old b&w photo of the anxious-looking woman (the one of just her eyes, with her hands clasping the side of her face) in a book I’m working on. I was wondering whether you would know anything about its origins, and in particular, whether it is still under copyright. And if it is, who might own it. Even where you sourced the photo would be tremendously helpful and very much appreciated. Many thanks, Paul

    • I would have to know exactly the image as there re several B&W anxious women. It is likely an old vintage Anacin ad.

Hi Sally, Thanks for getting back to me, and sorry for being a bit vague in my request. The photo I’m enquiring about is from the Cuban Missile Crisis Pt 1 article, from October 22, 2012, illustrating the High Noon section. You mentioned that it might be from an old Anacid ad in your reply, so I’ll check that out. Thanks again, Paul
