A Different Independence Day

Vanity Fair 1933 Illustration Paolo Garetto

It’s hard to think of hot dogs, barbecues, fireworks, and celebrations when the freedom and independence we celebrate today feel so fragile.

When the president of the Heritage Foundation says “We are in the process of a Second American Revolution,” believe him. The Republican’s fever dream of the 2025 Project is closer than we think.

Things are veering far too right in our world and that’s just wrong.

And scary.

I agree, Sally. The negativity, hateful rhetoric and extremism is a dark cloud. Our generation never dreamed we would live to witness such a tipping point. It is scary.

The second half of this statement: “which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be” sets the tone for Saturday’s shooting. It’s as if Kevin Roberts was daring someone to take a shot at Trump. I’m seeing so much in the news right now about Biden’s rhetoric endangering Trump. These violent statements have been coming out of Trump and his camp since 2015. The republicans have a powerful PR machine that is eagerly gobbled up by the masses. Soon we’ll learn that gun violence is the result of leftist policies.
