Daughters Day From a Daughter

Loving Daughters. (L-R) My Aunt Judy, My Grandmother Sadie, my mother Betty

As a childless dog lady, I have no daughters of my own to honor on National Daughters Day.

Still, I am a daughter myself and learned about being a loving one from a devoted, adoring, and loving daughter herself, my mother Betty.

I saw how attentive and caring my mother and her sister my aunt were to their mother and how deeply connected my grandmother Sadie was to her mother, my great-grandmother Rebecca who she visited every day in Crown Heights.

Like clockwork.

Daughter and Mothers. My grandmother Sadie Joseph and her mother Rebecca Posner, Brooklyn, NY 1940s

This great-grandmother,  also a devoted daughter, eventually sent for her mother from London to live with her. I can’t imagine the ache she must have felt as a daughter leaving her mother behind, so far away,  for so many decades.

When my mother Betty passed away it was important to me that along with “Loving Wife, Mother, and Grandmother” the word  “Daughter” be inscribed on her headstone.

She was the best daughter I’ve ever known.

Because I know this is not every daughter’s experience, I am grateful for the lineage of deeply bonded mothers and daughters as part of my heritage.
