Apocalypse Now

Only nine days into this new year, and each day bring a new disaster to sob over.

As I listened today to the eulogy at Jimmy  Carter’s funeral I couldn’t help but feel it as the death of decency in America, as we slide helplessly into this vile and cruel new era of Donald Trump.

The contrast is almost Biblical in proportion. The Sunday School teacher vs the huckster hawking his own brand of Bible.

The poignant image of the flag-draped casket resting in the Washington National Cathedral sits side by side with the fiery apocalypse happening in real-time in Los Angeles, this destination of so many American Dreams.

The utter loss of homes, property, businesses, and history is unimaginable. The uncontrollable, destruction destroying everything in its path.

How do you even begin to comprehend the loss?  Gone in a flash, are all the documentations of a life lived- of tokens big and small, the childhood photos, cherished heirlooms, the flotsam and jetson that make up a person’s life and define us,  the things that give us joy just knowing they are there.

As our collective pain deepens, our tone-deaf president-elect rants on about his delusions of manifest destiny of conquering Greenland, Panama, and yes, even Canada.  Americans suffer in unimaginable ways and he talks about shower heads and dishwashers.

We mourn and he salivates about re-naming bodies of water.

What about the eggs, sir, the groceries? Will renaming The of Gulf of  Mexico help bring down the cost of bacon?

Americans are in despair, and we and he will never hear us.

We are only on day 9.

People have forgotten how the “Chosen One” had dealt with the “flu”…

It’s terrifying. Our daughter and grandson live near Culver City. We’re glued to the news and trying to convince her to come here. We have friends and colleagues in LA and we’re just heartbroken at what they’re going through.

Speaking of heartbreak, what the hell was Obama doing, chatting with the anti-Christ? THAT stuck a needle in my heart. WTH, ‘Bama?!

It is terrifying and watching helplessly from afar is its own form of terror. I hope your daughter and grandson remain safe, but take you up on your offer to stay with you. Even if they are fortunate enough to not have their home affected, the air quality is so toxic there. My niece lives in LA and she was able to get a flight out of LAXon Wed to fly back to NY. There are very few of us who don’t know someone who has not been personally affected by this and lost the unimaginable.
The dynamics of who spoke to who, who shook hands etc at Carters funeral was Shakespearean in the dynamics. Watching Obama and Trump appear so chummy and chuckling is hard to wrap your mind around. Everyone is speculating.
