A word in defense of skunks: when I worked in a former gold rush town in the mountains, I walked home late at night and realized that a skunk was trotting along on the other side of the street. The skunk showed no signs of malice or vengeful intent.

With apologies to skunks. My comparison was only to their strong defensive mechanism that has a noxious odor. A nurse I was once chatted with told me the story that as a child she had a pet skunk who was like a cat. ( The had had the skunk decented, his spray gland removed)
