No Kings But  Plenty of Americans

Neither snow nor rain nor gloom of night would keep me and thousands of others from protesting against Donald Trump this Saturday in the No Kings Day Of Defiance.

New Yorkers shrugged off the pelting rain that was drenching the city streets as just another nuisance, just as others in every town in all fifty states marched defiantly, regardless of scorching sun, high winds, or the threat of the National Guard.

New York City was out in full force, and it was exhilarating and empowering to be among them. Old lefties with soggy pony tales rubbed elbows with pink-haired Gen Z protestors. Men, women,  children, and the elderly marching with walkers were all one that day.

As I stood among the demonstrators marching downtown, the blaring horns and anti-Trump chats filling the air it felt like déjà vu all over again.

N.Y.C. 2016

Hadn’t I been in a similar march in 2016, the weekend after the election?

Devastated and in disbelief, New Yorkers gathered en masse in Union Square to march up to Trump Tower in anger.  How could this charlatan, this con man, well known to New Yorkers as a loser and a joke, really be our president? And beat Hillary Clinton?

How could I now be marching in the same place against the same president nine years later?

Trump began his first term dismissive of the separation of powers, civil liberties, and civil rights. Today, nothing had changed but his brazenness, embracing his authoritarian inclination with gusto, unchecked.

The rain didn’t stop New Yorkers, and neither will Donald Trump

Note

With my hands holding onto my sign as I marched, taking photos was at times difficult, so a big thank you to my marching pal Jeff Tamarkin for these great photos documenting the N.Y.C. March, June 14, 2025

Good for you getting out there! I’m relieved there were no trouble making anti-protesters.

Thanks. Given my back I wasn’t sure how I would do but whatever discomfort I felt was well worth it. The police were out in full force very calm, and it was as peaceful as anything I’ve ever attended.

Heartening and disgusting all at the same time. Add in a dash of surrealism. Can’t believe this is America. Thanks for marching. I think there was a large element of risk for all who turned out. Surprised and happy that it was a peaceful day of protest.

There had been so much concern and warnings before the protests with instructions how not to get arrested, avoid tear gas etc. I wasn’t really that worried but the day before I went I did casually ask my husband who is an attorney, if I should call him or get the name of another lawyer if I was arrested, and he just brushed it off. It was so peacefully inclusive and even the cops seemed calm and enjoying themselves.
