Tonight’s seder is tiny.
But my table is full. It is filled with my family, and I can call up their spirit at a mere glance. It is set with my mother’s hand-painted Seder plate, and with my great-aunt and grandmother’s china. We will say kiddish with my great-grandfather Abraham’s silver kiddish cup and eat the food with sterling silverware that my Nana Rose and great-grandmother Rebeca used at their own seders over a century ago.
I have only to look at the ceramic Miriam’s Cup and recall my Aunt Judy, who gifted it to me. The familiar wine-stained Maxwell House Haggadahs are the ones my mother got for free at our neighborhood A&P in 1959 and have been read from by family and friends every year since then.
If I feel alone, I have only to look down at my table and call up the presence of all my beloved family, and this tiny table is full, as is my heart.
Wishing all my friends and family who celebrate a very meaningful Passover.

You captured the essence of this important thread through generations. Your table may be small but you love is large.

Dear Sally, As always I love to read all your blogs and relate to so many of them. This year Passover was without any family or close friends but did sit at a table for 2 with a man from Devonshire. Devonshire does a very nice job but so different from being with Sandy either with you or years ago with 30 or more relatives at my Aunt and Uncles very large apt. In NYC. When I was young, we were not invited till we were 8 years old and at that time it was hard to sit through the reading of the Haggadah but got to appreciate it as we got older. I miss being with family so much now. I wish you were walking distance away as Iwish we could see each other often. Were Jessie and Sam at Andy’s this year or is Sam in New Zealand? Have you met his girlfriend and is it serious that he is going to New Zealand for 6 or 12 months. He is such a nice young man and I wish him well. How is Jessie and is she happy in her career? So many questions that we would be better to have a chat on the phone. Sally, I think of you many times a day and so wish we could be together more often. I am hoping you are feeling better as I worry about your health. I am so glad John is in your life as I think he is a terrific man and so good for you. How is Betsy doing and was she with family for Passover? She is such a nice person. Please take good care of yourself, Sally. Sending lots of love to you, Aunt Lois
