Shake, Rattle, and Moe!

Moe in his earthquake high-alert mode

While some were shaking in their boots this morning, for my dog Moe, the earthquake in the northeast was a big snoozer. Literally.

He slept through it all.

This morning as my 1870 house shook, thick walls trembled and the sound and feel of a rogue New York City subway somehow winding its way to run under my Long Island home, the last thing on my mind was an earthquake. Quickly turning to social media my feeds were clogged with similar experiences from friends in New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut. We had in fact all experienced an actual 4.8 earthquake.

Everyone but Moe, it seems.

It’s well documented that dogs can behave strangely in advance of an earthquake, anywhere from seconds to a day.

This afternoon at the dog park, tongues were wagging as the topic du jour among all the doggies was the big earthquake. Amidst all the canine chatter, Moe was conspicuously silent.

Many dogs seemed to have had quite the reaction to judge by the conversation- minutes before the earthquake hit, goldens were barking for no reason, beagles howling and Weimaraners were whining. Some refused to go outside, and one little Yorkie went to hide under furniture.

But Moe came through for me just when it counted. Once the tremors and shaking house were over he went into high-cuddle mode. Just what my jangled nerves needed
