What Are We Doing to These Children?i

childs hand in fence Separation of migrant families is a draconian measure with long-lasting consequences for both the children and our society

I want to scream.

Hearing the plaintiff crying of these children makes me want to scream.

Hearing the lies perpetrated by Trump and his heartless enablers on an hourly basis   makes me want to howl.

Feeling helpless at the sight of youngsters languishing in cages makes me want to cry out.

What are we doing to these immigrant children cruelly taken  from their parents who are seeking asylum?

The  screaming will die down in time but the impact of this unspeakable  trauma will be long-lasting.

As someone who has experienced early childhood trauma I know  this to be true. I can attest to the psychological and physical effects experienced decades later.

Even those too young to understand will not be spared. Perhaps especially those too young to understand.

If someone thinks  a toddler is be too young to remember this trauma they are mistaken.  The 2-year-old too young to comprehend, is not too young to remember the fear. It will imprint and alter their brain and body chemistry and ultimately their behavior.

We know the immune system, neurological, endocrine are all affected. I have lived this.

This is irreparable damage being done to these children.

Pediatricians, psychologists and health experts all strongly oppose Trumps Draconian border crossing policy.

Speaking to Harvard Medical School professor Charles Nelson, The Washington Post explained :

This is what happens inside children when they are forcibly separated from their parents.

Their heart rate goes up. Their body releases a flood of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. Those stress hormones can start killing off dendrites — the little branches in brain cells that transmit messages. In time, the stress can start killing off neurons and — especially in young children — wreaking dramatic and long-term damage, both psychologically and to the physical structure of the brain.

The effect is catastrophic.

Suffer the Little Children

The 3-year-old terrified, cries for his papi will never forget

The 6-year-old with night terrors and no one to comfort and hold her will never forget

The 8-year-old feeling forsaken, desolate and confused will never forget

The panic-stricken 7-year-old looking for his mother will never forget.

The 12-year-old feeling abandoned, isolated and fearful will never forget.

The 17-year-old feeling afraid and angry… will never forget.

These children will never forget

And neither shall we.

We must never forget we are Americans and have zero tolerance for this policy.

Now is the time for all of us to scream.

Thank you Sally. I am also an early childhood trauma survivor. The eve widening and long-lasting human toll of this selfish political stunt sickens me. Trump, Sessions, Kelly, Miller, Conway, Nielson and Pence can go to hell.

You are so right in characterizing this as the political stunt that it is. This band of cruel and clueless vermin are destroying human lives who will suffer for years to come. They will never be the same. Nor will we. Thank you for sharing your insight borne from knowledge

  3. Dump’s holding children hostage for a freaking wall, and dares to blame congress for not stopping this and going along with him. It’s a hostage negotiation, despicable. Every time I think Dump can’t get worse, he tops himself with glee and smugness. Ugh…

    • I so agree. Just when you think he can’t act in a more reckless, heinous, despicable manner he out does himself. He is basking in what he sees as his being “strong” in the face of outrage. Children being used as pawns in his power play is pure evil

  4. I guess your president is sending them back home to their country of origin with their families, and when they get a visa they can return, that is the law in the U.S, You know how much money I spent and time for me to get a visa to the U.S? And if you don’t have the money….. tough luck, life is not fair, but there are laws in countries being immigration or other thing. I was in jail because of steeling food when I was homeless. I didn’t have money so did that make it right?I might as well have traveled cheep to Mexico and jump the fence illegally.

I hope the author here can get past her emotional response and consider the American children living in poverty. I do not see her writing about them. A word on this concept of taking the “best and brightest” from other countries as our “Preferred” class of immigrants. IMO that is a moral wrong – as in they should be the ones to build their countries OUT of their 3rd World status – and all families, including children, can be UNITED in their nations.

In the meantime, either the law is obeyed by all – including ostensibly the author when she is chosen as a “Preferred” target of local traffic enforcement as a likely ea$y and compliant mark (as per my multiple LEO friends) – or NONE. My local school board uses “the children” as human shields to get their way too – in the way of more bennies.

There is a place for emotions. And a place for reason. Rhetoric vs. facts.
