What happens when the country you pledged allegiance to is no longer the country you recognize?
A worn third-grade civics book becomes the lens through which I examine America’s broken promises. Beginning with the patriotic lessons of my 1963 classroom, I Am An American traces how a generation raised to believe in democracy, compassion, and the common good came to witness those ideals unravel under Donald Trump.
Part memoir, part cultural history, and part elegy, the visual essay asks what patriotism means when loving your country also means mourning what it has become.
