I Was Told to Stay Silent. Then Hundreds of Women Broke Their Silence.

After I spoke publicly about my rape, hundreds of women wrote to me. Some were in their 70s and 80s, carrying secrets they had kept for decades.

Then, during a routine medical appointment, a nurse practitioner told me: “You should have kept this to yourself.”

I recognized her words. They echoed the lessons that had kept so many of us quiet in the first place.

My new HuffPost essay is about that encounter, the women who entrusted me with their stories, and the shame we were taught to carry that was never ours.

You do not owe anyone your story. But you deserve to be heard if you choose to tell it.
