A Shonda For Democracy

Everything about Amy Coney Barrett is a Shonda!

Though that Yiddish word means scandal it has nothing to do with the showrunner of that classic TV series, Shonda Rhimes!

Shonda is Yiddish for something scandalously shameful, a disgrace, an embarrassment. It is a word I would hear my parents use in disgust and it is a word I have uttered more than once during these past 4 years.

It is a word that I can’t seem to get out of my mind when it comes to the clandestine like court appointment of  Amy Barrett.

A Shonda

The rush to nominate, approve, and swear in Amy Coney Barrett is a shonda.

Her confirmation to the Supreme Court just 8 days before the election is a shonda.

Replacing a groundbreaker for women’s rights with a woman for whom every day is Throwback Thursday is a shonda.

There feels as if just no other word to express the scurrilousness of what we have witnessed. But I can try.

Nefarious

Witnessing a corrupt president beaming as his hand-picked,  handmaiden get sworn in in the dark of night was repugnant.

Unprincipled

Seeing her standing on the White House balcony in her own Evita-like moment as guests applauded her on the South Lawn in what looked like a Trump reelection rally was reprehensible.

Disgraceful

It is deplorable that an independent woman like RBG whose own husband supported, encouraged, and sacrificed his own career to advance hers, is now being supplanted on the Supreme Court by another woman who belongs to a group who teaches that wives must submit to the wills of men, whose faith community asserts that a husband’s responsibilities include “correcting” his wife should she stray from the proper path.

A pioneer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg followed her own path to clear the path filled with roadblocks for others. She did not need a course correction. The system did. And she corrected it.

Now that stands to be dismantled.

That is not only a shonda for democracy. That is a tragedy.

  1. I have frequently thought to myself, Sally Edelstein (you should subscribe to her blog) really has a way with words. This post makes that clear. Words matter and she makes them count. Please, if you believe this post speaks the truth, share it among your friends on social media. Amplify her voice. This gal (a word she loves to use referencing herself) needs to be heard far and wide.

  2. Sally, I was watching an interview with historian Jon Meacham, who has endorsed a presidential candidate for the first time with Joe Biden. He said our democracy is at stake. He did reiterate what I believe.

We can fuss and fume, but while rushed, the Senate did what they were supposed to do and followed process. Where they waylaid America is when a very fine judicial nominee in Merrick Garland was nominated. By not following normal process, the Republican leadership violated their oath to serve America.

When political leaders do not follow process, take it to the bank it is political. Of course, Messers. McConnell, Graham et al are hypocritical, but they do not care. We should care.

What aggravates me most is the Senate failed to do their job and provide oversight over the most corrupt and deceitful president in my lifetime. This president fired or removed several Inspectors General who raised issues and concerns about this president’s actions, numerous public servants who testified under oath at great risk (knowing they would be fired) about their concerns over the actions of the president.

Further, this president has the highest turnover rate of any president and has a modus operandi of using temporary directors as no one is taking the time to vet them. Oh and by the way, no one has vetted his nepotistic appointments of his daughter or son-in-law, who are doing the work of vetted officials. Kushner was denied security clearance until his father-in-law intervened and as per a reporter in Saudi Arabia, both Ivanka and Jared are in the pockets of the royalty.

So, the very president who needs the most oversight, they punted and failed America. And, I am hoping a number of them are not reelected – Graham, Tillis, McSally, are at risk along with others. McConnell will likely survive to wield his hypocrisy some more. Keith
